AAFP is an association of family physicians designed to fortify the family medicine branch of the health care system. Its members are a group of more than 130,000 practicing family physicians, students, residents, and life members. AAFP advances the specialty serving the needs of its members and their patients through programs such as Physician Health First, Rural Health Matters, and the Ask and Act Tobacco Cessation Program.
The Rural Health Matters initiative, for example, was designed by AAFP to improve the health of rural residents and communities across the US. This initiative focuses on helping the approximately 17 percent of AAFP members who work with the rural population, and the group began its implementation in the summer of 2019.
